WINTER EVENT #8
Late SUN, 2/10, thru TUES, 2/12 (Two Phases of Storminess)
With cold air already in place to start the day on Sunday, 2/10, thanks to a cold high pressure center to the north, and with moisture moving into the region from the WSW later Sunday evening/night due to the development of some moisture along a frontal boundary (late SUN into MON) plus an advancing low pressure center well to the west of the region (late MON thru TUES), a wintry mix is expected for much of the area SUN PM-MON AM with rain ultimately taking over from MON PM into TUES PM. Here are the highlights:
-Precipitation is expected to move into the region late SUN (2/10) thru much of MON AM (2/11)
-The precipitation will likely be a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain from SUN PM thru late MON AM, especially for those areas along and N & W of I-95, before more rain mixes in as warmer air is ultimately pulled in from the SSW (much of the areas along I-95 south of D.C. and in Southern MD and the middle/lower MD Eastern Shore will likely see very little wintry precip with mostly rain falling the entire period, though some sleet and snow are possible for a brief period overnight SUN into MON).
-Most precipitation that falls late MON thru much of TUES (2/12) will likely be in the form of rain across the DMV region.
As a result, expect possible delays/cancellations to school systems in the DMV region Monday as well as to private businesses & the Federal Government, especially those along and N & W of I-95.
This will be a two-pronged storm event with the initial moisture coming into the region in the 7pm-11pm time frame on Sunday, 2/10, and lasting thru much of Tuesday, 2/12. The greatest threat for wintry precipitation is late 2/10 (7pm SUN) thru the morning of 2/11 (10am MON).
