Winter Event #3 (the first being 11/15/2018 and the second occurring on 12/9/2018) should end up being the first storm of the 2018-2019 season that produces snow for the entire DMV region.  And while not expected to be the largest storm ever by any means, it should end up being a nice, solid snow-producer with a general 3-6" accumulation range falling across much of the region as low pressure moves by to the south of the DMV and to a position off the NC/VA coast somewhere...where it'll ultimately progress out to sea instead of turning up the coast.

Some light snow is expected to break out in the PM hours of Saturday (1/12), but most of the accumulating snow will likely fall in the overnight hours of Saturday night/Sunday morning and throughout Sunday (1/13).

We think this storm will produce snowfall in a similar manner to the 12/9/2018 storm in which sections south and east-southeast of D.C. get the most, but the main difference here being all of the region should get in on the action this time around despite another very strong, slightly-suppressing high pressure center to the NNE of the DMV.  Here's our take on expected snowfall amounts:

  • Annapolis = 4.4"
  • Baltimore (BWI) = 4.2"
  • Dulles, VA = 3.5"
  • Washington, D.C. = 3.4"
  • Frederick, MD = 3.1"
  • Winchester, VA = 3.0"
  • Waldorf, MD = 5.1"
  • Bel Air, MD = 2.9"
  • Bowie, MD = 4.5"
  • Gaithersburg, MD = 3.4"
  • Columbia, MD = 4.0
  • Fredericksburg, VA = 5.9"
  • North East, MD = 2.7"
  • Easton, MD = 4.9"
  • Cambridge, MD = 5.7"

Bottom line: this is a legitimate winter storm threat that could produce plow-able snow for much of the DMV region, so stay tuned...enjoy the scenery when it happens...and be safe if out and about on the roads once this storm occurs.

As always, stay tuned for updates just in case anything changes...and, of course, have fun and be safe.
